I hope everyone had a great Halloween. I took my twins to the Zoo for a trick or treating experience there. They are now 2 months old and very chatty… like their mommy.
They were little pumpkins this year as they were too small for much else. They had bows at one point, but they hated wearing them. Hopefully soon I’ll get them used to bows and hats to keep their little heads warm.
On Halloween we handed out candy. We used to get close to 100 kids because we hand out the big bars. That’s been slowly dwindling and I had a friend say that it’s because trunk-or-treat is killing trick-or-treating. I can see his point in the matter, but my question is, WHY?
Most trunk-or-treating happens during the day. It doesn’t even usually happen on Halloween. So, why can’t we do both? The best part of Halloween growing up was going house to house and getting candy. Showing off my costume, and then when I got home, going through it all to look for “dangerous” things. It was a blast and some of my favorite family memories. I get the idea of trunk-or-treat for littles, like my girls. They’re not walking (obviously), so going house to house is a bit silly, and would definitely be more for me than them. I get that it’s “safer”, but in all honesty…. is it? Creeps can just as easily masquerade at a trunk-or-treat. If anything, you have a bigger chance of getting something bad at those places than you would walking around a safe neighborhood. Now I agree that not all neighborhoods are safe. Which is why my parents always took us to a different one…my Nana’s. If you don’t have a means of driving to another location to trick-or-treat, I can understand how the trunk-or-treat is appealing… but I honestly feel like not going on Halloween night is taking away the joy of the night from kids.
Adults talk about wanting their children to experience childhood and not grow up too fast like how we had to… but do you? Isn’t depriving them of the Halloween experience not allowing them to enjoy childhood? Isn’t staying home while their friends go out actually excluding them? You’ve spent money on a costume they will probably only wear this year… wouldn’t you want them to wear it as much as possible and show it off?
I don’t know what the reason is. I had a ton of big bars to hand out and maybe had 20 kids… and that’s a BIG MAYBE. I can’t wait until next year when the twins are walking and I can take them around and show their costume off, get free candy, and watch the joy on their faces as they go from house to house; looking at the awesome decorations that houses went to a lot of trouble to decorate, and using their manners by saying thank you!
