So a long while ago I was part of a Dirty Villains anthology. I never finished my story as I had a lot of family things pop up. My story was supposed to be based on Maleficent. I had about 3 chapters written with my characters and this story taking place at a pottery studio. Well, this past February for Flirty in Kansas City I had the opportunity to once again participate in the anthology for the signing. I dug this story out from the deep, dark depths of my google drive and was like, “I could make this work”! I changed the story premise a little, added a bit more smut, then realized about 3/4 of the way through that this was going to be much longer than the 10k words allotted for the anthology. So, I did something I’ve never done in an anthology before… I added a “TO BE CONTINUED”!! (Insert shocked face)
Well, I’ve slowly been allowing this story to come into it’s own, and it’s crazy. It will be my first book with legit trigger warnings. The first half of the book is adorable and fun with a few potholes for the characters to get through in order for their relationship to grow… but then it gets kind of dark and goes down a rabbit hole I’ve never done before. Now I’m at a crossroads with this story. It can go two different ways, and I’m tempted to make it do that. Kind of like a “choose your own adventure”. Anyone my age will remember those fun Goosebumps books that told you to “turn to page (blah) to follow the noise, or turn to page (blah) to go down the hall”. I’m almost very tempted to do that… not sure how it will be perceived…
Thoughts?!!?
Also, you probably noticed that there are 2 covers! This is true. It is my first book that will host duel covers. You will have the option to buy the one with people, or the discrete cover. Since this topic is hot right now, and I want everyone to enjoy my work, I’m going to offer this option as a test. I want to see how this all works out as far as what kind of cover is pulling people. If it’s well received, I’ll possibly do this to some of my other books. I’m excited for both of these covers as my cover designer did a lovely job! Exactly what I was looking for!! Which way do you lean? Do you like people on covers, or do you prefer the discrete one?
