Why Author World HATES AI:

Ok, so not all of author world hates AI, but many of them do. Why? Well… I asked that question too. I know why I, personally, don’t like AI, but I didn’t want to be bias. So, here’s what author world says about AI:
“It’s theft. It takes art from real people and packages it up, in a different package, and the real artist lose out.” from a well known cover model. (Due to respect for identity, I’m not naming names)
“And it is lazy way of making art.” from an artist.
“It takes away human imagination, human understanding, discovery, compassion, problem solving, and control. It has the capacity to enslave ingenuity, critical thinking and human survival. It is an informative tool that needs boundaries, restrictions and monitoring otherwise it becomes a nuclear disaster waiting to happen.” from an author.

It’s not all dislike though. Some have a different perspective on AI. A known cover designer says, “I’ll say that I don’t hate it. How people use it is about their own ethics. AI doesn’t truly have ethics, feelings, etc and only does what it’s told. I can hate the developers behind the AI for how art is acquired for use. I can hate how some try to pass off full on books written by AI as their own, just like plagiarizing essays in school in my mind. But I won’t hate AI itself as it can be a useful tool (spell check, name generators, etc).”

I’m not a fan of AI in the author/creative world. I think it takes away from those that are working their A$$ off to create wonderful stories, art, etc. When I hear that someone used AI to create a novel that is now a best selling book, and I’m over here trying to get people to read my stuff, it’s upsetting. Especially because most of those using the AI are doing it to discredit the creativity needed to write stories. You don’t have to worry about paying for cover designers, cover models, formatters, editors, or even the money needed to print if you use AI and keep it digital. You can sell the story super cheap. You don’t have to spend hours and hours pouring over character development, plot holes and wondering if you’re any good at this craft because AI does it all and you don’t need to think. My husband used AI to create the information for his ebay listing just the other night. I got mad at him because I’m usually the one that writes those for him. I enjoy coming up with something catchy and fun. AI took that job from me. So, I think of AI like that. It’s stealing jobs from people. Jobs of creating wonderful worlds that people like to get lost in.

I feel AI has potential to be helpful in many aspects of the world we are becoming, but I also feel like it is stealing creativity from young people. When I have a 4th grader tasked with making up a story about a fantasy world and the child goes “I don’t have an imagination” it makes me sad. Kids are stuck on their electronics, and with AI, they don’t need to come up with a story because AI will do it for them. Again, just my opinion. I know we all love some author world drama!
