Welcome to another episode of “Are You F*cking Kidding Me?!” On this episode we’re going to discuss the bad juju surrounding NaNoWriMo. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it stands for “National Novel Writing Month” and it happens every November. There’s an entire website and everything when people try to write a 50k word novel through the month and submit it to NaNo judges. It’s a whole thing. I used to do it a few years ago, and even participated in the kids one with some of my 5th graders because NaNo has something for everyone!
Well… now NaNo is in the sh!tter over everyone’s favorite issue: child endangerment. That’s right friends, NaNoWriMo has been given evidence that one of their moderators was exploiting kids on a personal forum as well as holding inappropriate conversations with teens. (Insert smack in the head here). I guess I just don’t understand people. NaNoWriMo was given this evidence and the only thing they did was remove the moderator from his position… but they didn’t even kick him off the site. So, this man is still preying on kids with his same NaNoWriMo handle and using his (ex)authority. Honestly, makes me sick. Also, makes me really glad I haven’t participated in NaNoWriMo in a few years.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think NaNoWriMo site owners should do more? Do you think the problem has been adequately addressed? Would you leave the site and not continue, or does this not really effect you?
Many authors and patrons of NaNoWriMo have boycotted the site now. Refusing to have their names associated with it. NaNoWriMo could very well be doomed if enough people leave. While NaNoWriMo is a national event, this is centered around the official site.
